Last week, advisors from EUCAP Somalia paid a visit to Djibouti’s Italian Training Mission (MIADIT). The two sides discussed about establishing cooperation and coordination between the two missions in providing support for the Somali Police Force Federal Darwish Force.
Darwish is a robust police force that is capable of operating in hostile non-permissive environments, mainly in areas newly liberated from Al-Shabaab, to hold the ground for the roll-out of the rule of law.
The Federal Darwish’s capacity building is supported by advisors from EUCAP Somalia, EUTM Somalia, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and the UN, with funding from the European Union.
The MIADIT mission in Djibouti, made up of Italian Carabinieri trainers, is already providing specialized training to the Somali Police Force Federal Darwish Police Officers twice a year. Since 2013, the Djiboutian Police Academy has hosted these training sessions in its facilities which consists of classrooms for theoretical training and field areas for practical training.
To ensure sustainability of the trainings, EUCAP will be offering mentoring support on selection criteria to have the best five trainees from the recently completed course to be trained in Djibouti as Trainer of Trainers (ToT) while incorporating lessons learnt from previous training support to Darwish.
