From October 29th to 30th, EUCAP Nestor conducted a two-day workshop in order to address the needs and priorities the Mission has so far identified in Puntland, reaching a broad consensus on what the Mission will aim to jointly implement for 2017-2018.
Among topics discussed during the workshop, held at the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, were better access to extant legislation for law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders, enhancement of law drafting capacity, the Puntland Maritime Academy and the Regional Maritime Security Program coordination architecture
Maritime, Legal and technical experts from the relevant ministries attended the workshop including the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Ministry of Security, Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration, Ministry of Interior, Local Government and Rural Development, Ministry of Maritime Transport, Ports and Counter Piracy, Ministry of Justice, Religious Affairs and Rehabilitation, Ministry of Constitution, Federal Affairs and Democratization, Puntland State University / Law Faculty and the Office for Human Rights Defender.
Both Director Generals of the lead ministries (Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, Ministry of Security, Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration) were highly appreciative of EUCAP Nestor’s drive and commitment in developing their presence and programme proposals in cooperation with Puntland authorities.
“We are grateful and we must support this mission to the best of our ability as it is in our own interest to invest in our future,” said the Director General Ministry of Security, Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration, Mr. Yaasin Ali Yuusuf.
EUCAP Nestor is a civilian EU mission, under the auspices of the Common Security and Defence Policy, which assists Somalia in strengthening its capacity to ensure maritime security and in particular to fight piracy.
