EUCAP Somalia Head of Mission, Maria-Cristina Stepanescu, met the first deputy of the Attorney General (AG), Muse Mokalim Mohamed, in Mogadishu on January 10th 2018.
During the meeting, Muse Mokalim Mohamed described the plans of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) for carrying out investigations and bringing prosecutions – and how they planned to enhance their capacity in these areas – and expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Mission’s legal team, who have been working with his office almost on a daily bases.
Besides mentoring activities, in the year just past, EUCAP Somalia organised five seminars dedicated to helping to train the AGO’s personnel, which focused on subjects that included police-prosecution cooperation and investigation techniques.
According to the AGO’s office, EUCAP Somalia’s continuing support of an enhanced application of the maritime criminal legislation and supporting the fight against maritime crimes (for example illegal maritime trafficking of goods, drugs or persons, illegal fishing, spilling of toxic substances into Somali waters near the shore), is greatly appreciated, as training sessions provided by the Mission have improved the AGO staff’s skills on both the carrying out of criminal investigations and the conduct of prosecutions and files management, as well as having successfully promoted cooperation with the police, particularly the Maritime Police Unit (MPU)
During today’s visit, the HOM of EUCAP Somalia, accompanied by a member of the Mission’s legal team, donated six laptops and desktop computers as well as a printer and copy machine to the AGO’s office.
