On 6th August, four RHIBs (Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats) were donated by the Italian Ministry of Defence to the Somali Navy during a handover ceremony at Mogadishu commercial seaport. H.E. Carlo Campanile, Italian Ambassador to Somalia, and COL Carlo Emiliani, Italian Defence Attaché, formally handed over the boats to GEN Ahmed Jumale Gedi, Chief of the Somali Defence Force, and ADM Maddey Nur Sheikh Ufurow, Chief of the Navy. ADM Said Aden Yusuf, commander of the Somali Coast Guards (understood to be transferring to the Ministry of Internal Security) also attended the ceremony. The two EU missions in Somalia, EU Training Mission and EU Capacity building mission (EUCAP SOMALIA), were respectively represented by GEN Addis, Force Commander, and CDR Lanfranco Amicarelli (on behalf of Head of Mission Maria-Cristina Stepanescu).
H.E. Carlo Campanile explained that the donation contributes to the global effort from the EU and the international community to build up Somali capabilities in fighting all kinds of maritime crime and to restore rule of law and governance over the Somali maritime domain
