Last week, EUCAP Field Office Garowe held a leadership workshop for middle-ranking officers from Puntland State Police, Criminal Investigation Department, Ministry of Security, and Attorney General’s Office to enhance their leadership skills.
This workshop, which lasted for two days, featured a lecture by Mr. Abdighani Farah Mohamud, the Chief Prosecutor, AGO Puntland on the first day, and a lecture on Crime Scene Management by Ms. Amal Abshir of the Bureau of Forensic Science Puntland’s Forensic Chemistry and Physical Evidence Section on the second day.
A group of 18 participants, including two female officers, attended the course facilitated and delivered by ECUAP’s Police Team and Legal Reform Advisor in Garowe.
The training provided participants with a thorough understanding of some of the key issues that leaders and managers face in the criminal justice system, covering topics such as effective leadership and leadership competencies, as well as legal elements of commanders’ responsibilities.
In his opening address, Col. Kismayo, Head of Training for Puntland State Police, had inspiring words about the course.
“The police and prosecutors must receive this type of training”, Said Col. Kismayo.
“It is always good to lead by example. Some leaders are born; however, leaders can also be made by education and courses like this one that EUCAPis offering here today”, Added Col. Kismayo.
On the other hand, EUCAP senior Police Adviser, Simon O’Connor, mentioned how leaders develop a vision to inspire people.
“Leaders create an inspiring vision of the future that motivates and inspires people to engage with that vision”, Said Simon O’Connor
The workshop managed to bring together middle-ranking officers from all nine Puntland regions, the AGO, and the Ministry of Security and Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration (MoS & DDR) and provided an opportunity for them to share concerns, ideas, and suggestions that could help them improve their day-to-day leadership and planning skills in managing their staff.
Ms. Amal Abshir of the Bureau of Forensic Science Puntland lectured about the newest forensic science advancements. “The Workshop was an excellent opportunity for the Bureau of Forensic Science to speak with the senior police commanders in Puntland State Police to share their experience and give an overview of the vital work the bureau does.” She said.
