The Somali Police Force (SPF) are continuing to develop a specialized federal unit of police called the Darwish, who are being trained by the Italian Carabinieri Training Mission in Djibouti (MIADIT), at the request of the Somali Government.
This month, the Head of the SPF Planning Team, Major Ahmed Issa Ahmed, together with EUCAP Somalia’s Head of Mission Chris Reynolds, met with the Commander of MIADIT, Colonel Giuseppe Corso, at the MIADIT training base in Djibouti, to discuss next steps in this training.
The Federal Darwish’s capacity building is supported by advisors from EUCAP Somalia, EUTM Somalia, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and the UN, with funding from the European Union. The Federal Darwish units are currently being deployed to areas newly liberated from Al-Shabaab to hold the ground for the roll-out of the rule of law.
EUCAP Somalia’s Head of Police Unit, Anu Aro, and Senior Reporting Officer Silvia Chiarelli also joined the meeting. Key topics discussed included the development of a training of trainers course, further support to the SPF Darwish training curriculum and the potential for joint-training events in Mogadishu.
