Seven officers (including one female) from the Somali Police Force Maritime Police Unit (SPF/MPU) enhanced their maritime situational awareness skills by participating in a training organised by EUCAP Somalia in Mogadishu on 4-6 December.
The course is the EU founded CRIMARIO (Critical Maritime Routes Indian Ocean) training on the IT software application on Indian Ocean Regional Information Sharing (IORIS) and on incident management network.
This kind of software and training supports the SPF/MPU in developing their capability in undertaking Coast Guarding functions aligned to Law Enforcement in the maritime environment and working collaboratively with other multi-agency actors.
CRIMARIO is part of the EU integrated approach to supporting Somali attain the knowledge and system assets to understand the requirements for Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA). This training is being undertaken alongside continued support and preparedness for increased operational readiness and in support other planned operational exercises.
IORIS gives the SPF/MPU the ability to self- train (support by ongoing EUCS guidance) and develop their own operational systems.
