The JMICC is a new Puntland Government Agency established with the support of EUCAP Somalia to improve the sharing and utilization of information to counter maritime crimes.
Yesterday, The Puntland’s staff of the Joint Maritime Information and Coordination Centre (JMICC) in Garowe participated in a training session for duties in their new centre. The activity was centred on simulated email messages with the Spanish EUNAVFOR ship ‘ESPS Relampago’.
By using realistic emails the staff is made familiar with the type of messages that they can expect when communicating with international maritime forces and commercial shipping operating in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin. In addition they will become familiar with the many technical and nautical terms and abbreviations. The training with ESPS Relampago will conclude on 5 February. More trainings are planned in the coming weeks.
Such activities are important so that the Puntland centre can be globally connected and able to provide high-grade information and advice to influence maritime Governance policy development and support government decision making processes during accidents, disasters and crisis management.
